Here in the 21st century, it’s clear to everyone that we’re living in the age of information technology and then some. Can you imagine your life without it? Portable computing devices, instantaneous messaging capability, and limitless information at our fingertips any time of the day or night are just a few of the perks IT in action bring to the table.
Since movies are a direct reflection of our culture at any given time, it only stands to reason that IT would make its way into the films we enjoy as well. Let’s take a closer look at some of the best, most iconic information technology films out there today.
1) The Matrix
If there’s one film that comes almost immediately to mind when you think of IT films, it’s definitely 1999’s The Matrix. It was written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski and features an incredible cast of actors including Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Hugo Weaving in positively iconic roles. It also features stunning visual effects that were not only groundbreaking at the time, but continue to impress even years later.
This film and its two sequels imagine a world literally defined by information technology as we follow computer programmer Neo on his journey from everyday Joe to savior of humanity as we know it.
2) Minority Report
This 2002 science fiction thriller starring Tom Cruise and directed by the always amazing Steven Spielberg is based on a short story by sci-fi genius Phillip K. Dick. It explores a fascinating but chilling future where information technology has allowed law enforcement to effectively predict crimes before they even occur. This film is notable for its distinctive look and stellar direction at the hands of Spielberg. It also raises some interesting questions about the ethical use of information technology. Are there some things we shouldn’t trust to tech?
Whether you’re talking about the original 1982 sci-fi film from Disney Pictures or the updated Tron Legacy films released more recently, it can’t be denied that Tron is truly one of the most amazing imaginings of a world fueled by IT ever. The films are known for their signature visual style, as well as their creative use of computer graphics and special effects. Like The Matrix, Tron takes IT in film to the next level by creating a rich, colorful world that literally is information itself. Watching the original film and then the remake offers an interesting perspective on how the original ideas have evolved over time as well.
4) Iron Man
Although there are more than a few superhero films that leverage the ideas behind IT to create immersive, fascinating worlds that appeal to today’s tech-savvy viewers (Batman comes immediately to mind), it’s hard to think of any that do it better than the Iron Man films do. Starring Robert Downey Jr. as billionaire and industrialist Tony Stark, Iron Man is all about imagining the wildest possibilities presented by both IT and engineering. Unlike Superman, Spiderman, or the Hulk, Iron man is a superhero not because of a genetic mutation or inborn powers. He owes his ability to save the world to technology alone. Very apropos in this day and age!
Last but certainly not least, we have another gem from the 1980’s. This one was directed by James Cameron and stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the ruthless title character. It imagines a 21st century controlled by artificially intelligent machines and razor-sharp information technology. It and its equally stunning sequels also offer an interesting look at the darker side of what tech brings to the table for humanity. Stunning special effects and killer writing help this classic hold up over time.
